 A Complaint was made that the Defense Ministry is a threat to the local and foreign nongovernmental organizations which are functioning in the northern areas, which are affected by war. The organizations complain that the Defense Ministry had imposed prohibitions to process their assignments in these areas, and had created many difficulties. |
| This action is a violation of the legislations of the nongovernmental organizations is according to sources. The officials who are attached to the non government organization is processing aid assignments in these areas had submitted this allegation. They informed, they are in an inconvenience position, as suddenly they are called by the Defense Ministry for investigations. On this basis, a directive was issued on the 30th of last month that the nongovernmental organizations willing to function in their activities should obtain permission through the Northern Provincial Presidential special Secretariat from the Defense Ministry. Even though prior registrations are done, and necessary permission is obtained, it was instructed by the recent directive, that fresh permission should be obtained by the nongovernmental organizations. Allegations are that aid workers are not permitted to the mostly affected Vanni district. According to the present implemented directive, the aid organization officials inform the aid items, which are in their possession, are not able to distribute to the displaced people due to this restriction. |
